Raising a Reader Program

Red Book Bags

Our Red Book Bags Program

The Red Book Bag Program is our gold-standard program since 2004. Preschool and kindergarten students bring home four new books to share with their families every two weeks. Books are returned and replaced every other week, and families receive more than 50 different books during the school year. Parent guidance to encourage reading at home as a family is provided with each bag. Teachers “gush” over the books in the book bags each week to encourage and excite children to take them home to read with their parents and families

To register to participate in our Red Book Bag Program, email suzanne@rar4kids.org.

Program Outcomes:
  • 87% of parents engaged daily with their child in a shared activity that involved lots of talking (vocabulary development)
  • 76% of families said that they have a routine for reading at home
  • 83% of families who participated in one of our book programs said they increased time spent reading aloud at home with their children.
  • 90% of families who participated in one of our book programs said their child’s interest in books increased
“Thank you very much for every book you gave my son. Because of the bags, my child gets excited about the books and wants to share them with the family and have his mommy read to him at night.”
