Raising a Reader Program

Bolsitas Rojas

Our Bolsitas Rojas Program

Our weekly Bolsitas Rojas outreach sessions take place in nine libraries, one community center, and at TACAW in El Jebel in which our bilingual program coordinators model story time, provide preschool activities, support parent engagement in positive literacy and learning behaviors, and provide a healthy snack and time for parents and caregivers to network and connect. We partner with FocusedKids and Vroom to provide self-regulation and brain empowerment skills to children and parents/caregivers every month from September to May. Our programs support early childhood literacy and language learning, healthy brain development, well-being at home, and a strong sense of community belonging for often isolated children and families.

Program Outcomes:
  • 97% of families who participated in the Bolsitas Rojas programs said they increased time spent reading aloud at home with their children.
  • 84% of families said they read to their children 15 or more minutes per day
  • 87% of parents said that they have a routine for reading at home
  • 85% of parents understand how brain function impacts behavior
  • 95% of parents engage daily with their child in a shared activity that involved lots of conversation (vocabulary development)
“My children now love to read and draw and we have a routine to read before bedtime. My children are also better at expressing themselves.” – Bolsitas Rojas Parent
