Raising a Reader Program

123 Let’s Read

Our 123 Let’s Read Program

123 Let’s Read is a program we have implemented in all public preschools from Aspen to Parachute. Preschool families receive a monthly storybook to keep (7 books total from October to April), along with book-related activity suggestions and tips to make the read-aloud time fun and engaging. The books and activities create a bridge between home and school to foster parents’ participation in supporting their child’s learning both in the classroom and at home. Each book comes with a set of family activities to help improve the child’s reading readiness, curiosity, and interest in books. Teachers also receive a classroom activity sheet for each book (different from the family activities) and encourage parents to use the home activities to support their child’s learning. In this way, the program increases dialog between teachers and parents and strengthens parents’ understanding of their role in supporting their child’s love of reading at home.

Program Outcomes:
  • 87% of parents engaged daily with their child in a shared activity that involved lots of talking (vocabulary development)
  • 76% of families said that they have a routine for reading at home
  • 83% of families who participated in one of our book programs said they increased time spent reading aloud at home with their children.
  • 90% of families who participated in one of our book programs said their child’s interest in books increased
“My child gets excited to receive the book and to get home to read. The instructions really gave me as a parent more ideas about interacting with the drawings as opposed to simply reading.” – 123 Let’s Read Parent
